Louisiana Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is one of the most exciting, yet frustrating activities a person could try.  It is like being happy and mad, at the exact same time!  With that being said, it is truly one of the most rewarding ways to spend your time on the water.

Fly fishing with Ellender Charters is limited to 1-2 people and consists of stalking the mighty redfish on Louisiana's beautiful coast.  These redfish can range from small "rat reds" to the powerful "bull reds" that exceed 30+ pounds.  Redfish isn't the only fish we can target, but it is the most common.  Other fish include black drum, jack crevalle, sheepshead and speckled trout.

I recommend bringing your own rod and reel.  Generally speaking a 7 or 9 wt rod should do the trick, but if you are looking to only catch big fish, then a 10 or 11 wt will work.  For site casting, I recommend bringing a good med heavy rod attached to either a baitcaster or spinning reel.  I like to use 30-50 lbs braid when targeting redfish.  If you cannot bring your own, no worries. I will have a rod and reel ready to go for you.

A typical day consists of meeting around 6:45 A.M. and departing at 7 A.M.  Depending on what you would like to target, the boat ride can be 10 minutes or it can be an hour.  The longer boat rides usually target bigger fish.  The total length of the trip will last 8 hours, having us back to the dock for roughly 3:00 P.M.  If you decided to keep a few fish, fish cleaning is included.
